Subject Leader: Mrs Marshall
1. Subject Vision and Intent
Physical Education (PE) at Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge CE Primary School develops confident, healthy and resilient children by encouraging success in competitive sports and physical activities while promoting fairness, respect, and teamwork. Rooted in the school’s Christian ethos, PE enables children to recognise and use their talents, fostering trust, compassion and perseverance as they “live life in all its fullness” through teamwork and support for others.
Pupils build fundamental movement skills, including running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance and coordination, before progressing to competitive games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming, while also learning to evaluate performance and identify their strengths and areas for improvement. PE supports spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by cultivating joy in movement, fair play, collaboration and an appreciation of diverse sports and activities.
Overall, it equips children with resilience, confidence, independence and self-discipline, giving them a lifelong understanding of health and fitness and preparing them to lead active, responsible and balanced lives.
2. Implementation — How the Curriculum Is Delivered
The PE curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6 to build fundamental movement skills and develop proficiency across a wide range of sports and activities, with lessons increasing in complexity and challenge over time. The school follows a clear, inclusive scheme, Primary PE Planning, aligned with the National Curriculum and supported by trained coaches and appropriate resources.
Teaching is adapted to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access learning and experience success. Staff benefit from ongoing CPD, training and coaching to maintain strong subject knowledge. Pupils also enjoy enrichment opportunities such as inter-school competitions, residential trips, swimming lessons, lunchtime sports and a variety of extra-curricular activities that broaden experiences and inspire engagement. Strong community links, including participation in Telford & Wrekin School Sport Partnership (TWSSP) events and local partnerships, further enhance the PE offer.
3. Inclusion and SEND
PE is accessible and ambitious for all pupils. Adaptive coaching strategies ensure children with SEND can participate fully and experience success. Pupils make progress from their starting points, building confidence, wellbeing and a sense of belonging through inclusive teamwork and cooperative activities.
4. Personal Development and Cultural Capital
PE promotes resilience, curiosity, independence and teamwork. Pupils explore moral values, cultural diversity and global sports traditions. Participation in competitions and collaborative activities prepares children for wider life, helping them flourish physically, socially and emotionally.
5. Impact — Monitoring, Evidence and Outcomes
Teaching and learning are monitored through lesson observations, pupil voice, planning reviews and performance in competitions. Evidence shows children make expected or better progress in skills, knowledge and social development. Pupils enjoy PE, remember key skills and vocabulary and show increased confidence. Recent developments include enhanced provision and structured lunchtime sports and play activities. Next priorities include expanding competitive opportunities and further embedding assessment of skills progression.
6. Subject Leadership and Development
PE leadership supports staff through CPD, modelling and sharing good practice to ensure consistency. Leadership aligns with the School Development Plan by promoting health, wellbeing and personal development. Subject leaders review curriculum design, monitor pupil progress and maintain strong links with the wider community to enhance provision.
