Relationship and Sex Education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

At Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge C.E. Primary School, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) forms an important part of our curriculum.

RSE supports children to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to build healthy relationships, stay safe and respect themselves and others.

Our approach is underpinned by our Christian values of Trust, Responsibility, Respect, Compassion and Perseverance.

What is RSE?

In primary schools, RSE focuses primarily on:

  • Building positive friendships
  • Understanding families and relationships
  • Respecting differences
  • Personal boundaries and consent (age-appropriate)
  • Keeping safe (including online safety)
  • Understanding how bodies grow and change

RSE is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive way.

Our Approach

We teach RSE through:

  • PSHE lessons
  • Science curriculum (including statutory teaching about human development)
  • Collective Worship and discussions
  • Wider safeguarding and wellbeing education

Lessons are carefully planned to ensure content is appropriate to the age and maturity of pupils.

We create a safe and respectful classroom environment where children feel confident to ask questions.

Statutory Requirements

Relationships Education is statutory in all primary schools.

Health Education is also statutory.

Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from Relationships Education or Health Education.

Sex Education beyond the National Curriculum for Science is not compulsory in primary schools. Parents have the right to request withdrawal from any non-statutory sex education elements, following discussion with the senior leadership team.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We believe parents and carers play a vital role in supporting children’s understanding of relationships and wellbeing.

We inform parents in advance when sensitive topics are being taught and welcome conversations if you have any questions or concerns.
