Promoting British Values
Our Values Statement
At Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge C.E. Primary School, British Values are actively promoted through our Christian vision, curriculum and daily school life. Rooted in Jesus’ command to “love each other as I have loved you” and our commitment to “live life in all its fullness”, we ensure that children develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally so they are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
British Values are not taught in isolation. They are embedded across our curriculum, modelled consistently by staff and experienced through meaningful participation in school life.
We promote:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
How We Promote British Values
Democracy
We ensure that pupils have a genuine voice within our school community.
Our pupil leadership groups are selected through a democratic voting process, teaching children that every vote matters and that decisions can be made fairly.
Through weekly Picture News discussions, pupils explore current affairs and develop the confidence to express opinions respectfully, listen carefully to others and consider different viewpoints. Debate and reasoning are encouraged across the curriculum, particularly in English and PSHE.
Children learn that democracy involves both rights and responsibilities.
The Rule of Law
We promote clear and consistent expectations for behaviour so that all pupils understand the importance of rules in keeping our community safe and fair.
Class rules and school expectations are regularly discussed, helping children understand the connection between actions and consequences. Staff apply expectations consistently to create a calm, orderly and secure environment where learning can flourish.
Through PSHE and wider curriculum learning, pupils explore why laws exist in society and how they protect individuals.

Individual Liberty
We encourage pupils to become confident, independent learners who understand their rights and responsibilities.
Through PSHE, collective worship and daily interactions, children learn about making safe choices, expressing their views respectfully and understanding personal responsibility. They are taught that freedom comes with responsibility.
Leadership roles, charitable events and participation in the wider community help pupils understand how they can positively influence others. Online safety education further supports children in exercising liberty safely and responsibly.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to our Christian ethos and one of our core school values.
We teach children to treat one another with kindness, dignity and compassion. Inclusion is actively promoted so that every pupil feels valued and represented.
Through collaborative learning, community links and shared experiences, pupils learn to appreciate the contributions of others within our local area and beyond.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We celebrate diversity and actively promote equality.
Through our No Outsiders programme, children learn about the nine protected characteristics and develop an understanding of fairness, inclusion and respect. This supports pupils in recognising that everyone is unique and deserves equal dignity.
Our RE curriculum, collective worship and Picture News discussions provide opportunities to learn about a range of faiths, cultures and worldviews, preparing children for life in modern Britain.
Safeguarding and Wellbeing
Promoting British Values is closely linked to safeguarding. We are vigilant in protecting pupils from discrimination, prejudice and harmful influences.
Staff work closely with families and external professionals to ensure that all pupils feel safe, supported and able to thrive.
Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain
Our aim is not simply to teach British Values, but to ensure they are lived daily. Through respectful relationships, inclusive practice and meaningful participation, we help children grow into responsible, compassionate and active citizens.
