Medical Matters

Medical Matters

At Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge C.E. Primary School, the health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our priority. We work closely with families to ensure that children with medical needs are supported appropriately during the school day.

Medical Information

It is essential that parents inform the school of any medical conditions, allergies or ongoing health concerns. This includes:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies (including food allergies)
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Long-term medical conditions

Where appropriate, an Individual Healthcare Plan will be created in partnership with parents and healthcare professionals.

Parents must inform the school immediately of any changes to medical needs.

Medication in School

Where possible, medication should be administered at home.

If medication needs to be taken during the school day:

  • A parental consent form must be completed.
  • Medication must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and dosage instructions.
  • Medication should be handed directly to the school office.

We can only administer prescribed medication unless agreed in exceptional circumstances.

 Calpol (Paracetamol)

The school holds a small supply of Calpol (paracetamol suspension). This may be administered during the school day only with prior parental consent and where it is deemed appropriate by staff.

Asthma Inhalers & Emergency Medication

Children with asthma must have an inhaler in school at all times. Inhalers should be clearly labelled and in date.

The school holds emergency inhalers in line with statutory guidance.

Allergies

We are a nut-free school.

Parents must inform the school of any allergies and ensure medication such as antihistamines or adrenaline auto-injectors (e.g. EpiPens) are provided where required.

First Aid

Qualified staff are available throughout the school day to administer first aid.

In the event of a head injury, parents will be informed. If further medical attention is required, we will contact parents immediately.

Illness & Absence

Children who are too unwell should not attend school. Please inform the school office on each day of absence.

For guidance on specific illnesses and recommended exclusion periods (e.g. sickness and diarrhoea), please refer to NHS guidance.

Medical Appointments

Where possible, appointments should be arranged outside of school hours. If this is not possible, please inform the school office in advance.
