The more you read, the more you succeed
Phonics and early reading
At Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge CE Primary School, we are passionate about reading because it allows our pupils to fulfil their full potential and become life-long learners. Our pupils begin their reading journey in Reception where we teach early reading through the Read, Write Inc phonics program. These are daily, high-quality phonics lessons designed to teach your child to read with accuracy and fluency.
Parent video: What is Read Write Inc Phonics
This program is engaging, fun and thorough. To ensure progress, each child is assessed half-termly and streamed according to their phonics knowledge. To begin with, children are taught phonemes (pure sounds) and move on to digraphs (2 or more phonemes to make a sound) which we call ‘special friends’. We use Fred Frog and Fred Talk with your child to break each word into individual sounds and blend together into words.
Parent video: How to say the sounds
When ready, every child will read decodable book which use the sounds they know and a ‘tricky words’ which they have been taught. This builds our pupil’s reading confidence, gives each child the opportunity to blend words and read with expression.
Each child, who is taking part in the phonics program, will take home a phonics book which they have previously read at school. To support your child, please follow up reading with this text at home. Below are booklets which explain how you can support your child with their reading.
