The minimum age for Snapchat is 13 years, in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. We are hearing that a few children under 10 in our school are using it.
The minimum age for Fortnite is 12 and again we are aware of a number of children in school who play this. Children become angry and aggressive after playing the game. This then has a follow on impact in school with poor behaviour.
TikTok is another form of social media that children are using. On TikTok (formerly known as Muiscal.ly) people are able to comment on each other’s videos which sometimes leads to children being nasty by leaving hurtful and racist comments to friends as well as strangers. This can make them feel useless and alone, forcing them to delete their account. We don’t believe children at Coalbrookdale would act in this way but we would like to encourage all parents and carers to please monitor what social media apps your children are using or have access to.
