Head Teachers’ Message
Dear Parent/Carer
What a brilliant start to 2023!
There have been so many exciting things to share with the children this week and they have done amazingly, settling into new routines, and learning about our new school rules.
Your child may have come home and spoken to you about our new BeSMART rules. These rules are now followed by everyone. They are displayed in all classes and around the school.
Following pupil voice collection in the autumn term and work done by the Learning Council, children explained how they wanted to see more structure to how behaviour was managed. Children were not always able to explain their class-specific rules and so this is why we have moved to a whole school approach.
Children have spoken very positively about the new system which heavily relies on singing effort, achievement and good choices through praise, celebration and rewards. This new system is more structured and has clear steps and when children need support in making the right behaviour choices, there is time for them to do this, with the support from adults.
Everyone in school aims to positively praise children for their excellent behaviour and work. This will encourage motivation to learn, team spirit and improve morale so children will naturally feel good about themselves from the praise they receive for achievement in school. We believe that good behaviour should be consistently rewarded, and we have extended our list of ways in which we can reward our children. These include:
• Praise and encouragement – lots of WELL DONEs from everyone
• Head Teacher, Assistant Head and Class Teacher stickers
• Winning the weekly BeSMART trophy for whole class reward
• Class prizes (These are the same class prizes as previously awarded for completed sticker charts. Each day, children’s names are entered into a weekly raffle and two children are picked at random from each class, as the winners who can choose a prize from the class box.)
• Celebration of ‘Star of the Week’ through Shining Stars assembly
• Star of the Day nominations (Awarded with Star of the Day stickers.)
• Headteacher postcards sent home
• Phone calls home
• Visit to Headteacher
• Recognition discussion with parent/carer at pickup at end of day
With this new behaviour policy, there are even more opportunities to praise and reward children. Staff have been so impressed by the effort already seen by so many children and we have handed out so many rewards in just three days! A notable impact has also been seen on behaviour and positivity across the school.
We will be gathering pupil voice again very soon and will continue to monitor what children think over time.
The behaviour policy will be published on the website by the end of next week for you to view in more detail.
On another note, we have been so impressed with how hard children and families have worked to get to school at the earlier time. Considering this is just a trial period, the change seems to have been seamless for many and we have been able to make the most of the added time in school and get to learning straight away.
Wishing you a happy and relaxing weekend.
Mrs M Dhaliwal
