Message from Mrs Dhaliwal

As we come to the end of the spring term, we want to take a moment to celebrate what a wonderful and enriching few months it has been. The term has been filled with exciting learning opportunities and a wide range of enrichment experiences through visits and activities across each year group.

Our focus value this term has been compassion, and it has been a joy to see this lived out so positively by our children – both in the classroom and around school. We’ve celebrated this value throughout the week and during our Friday celebration worships, where children have reflected on how they can show compassion in their daily lives.

Each class has also worked incredibly hard as a team to earn their class tokens, and today they enjoyed a well-deserved reward with an activity of their choice. I’m sure the children will be full of stories to share with you as they begin their Easter break.

As we approach Easter – a time of hope, renewal, and new life in the Christian calendar – we are reminded of the importance of compassion, love, and forgiveness. May this Easter bring peace and joy to you and your families.

Looking ahead, the summer term is already full of exciting events and key dates, which we have included in the newsletter for you to add to your diaries. It promises to be a busy, but very special term.

School will reopen on Monday 28th April and we look forward to welcoming everyone back, ready for another term of learning and growth.

Wishing you all a happy, peaceful, and blessed Easter.

Eco Council News

Last Friday, the children from our Eco Council embarked on a meaningful trip to our local park, joined by Robert Petty from the Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Litter Picking Community Group. Robert kindly provided litter pickers for the children, who enthusiastically set about cleaning up the area.

The children had a fantastic time and collected a significant amount of rubbish. Among the interesting items they found were old trophies, glass bottles, BBQs, an animal skull, and plenty of plastic bottles. They diligently sorted the rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable categories.

At the end of the day, we gathered to reflect on the positive impact we had made on our lovely local park. The children should be incredibly proud of themselves for their responsibility, compassion, and respect towards other park visitors. They truly exemplified the wonderful qualities of the students here at Coalbrookdale School.

Recycling Workshop

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ruth Jones from Veolia Street Champions to our school. Ruth works for the council, delivering engaging workshops to children about the importance of recycling.

She began her day with our reception class, discussing where our recycling goes. The children learned about the clever trucks used for collection and the various materials that are sorted into them.

Following this, the entire school gathered for an assembly focused on recycling. Ruth explained the different bins we have in our local area and what each one is used for. The children participated in a quiz to test their knowledge, successfully identifying which items can be recycled.

Later, Ruth conducted a packed lunch workshop with Year 5. The students examined items from a supermarket to determine which could be packaged more sustainably and recycled. The compiled a list of needs and wants for items of clothing and food that could be sources in different ways. This session was a fantastic reminder for everyone to help protect our planet by recycling.

As we approach the Easter holidays, it’s worth noting that the UK consumes around 80 million Easter eggs each year, generating approximately 4,500 tons of packaging. Veolia has shared some top tips to help us recycle our Easter packaging correctly:

  • Cardboard: Place it in your blue bag. Remember to flatten the cardboard to create more space.
  • Plastic: If your Easter treat has plastic packaging, remove it and put it in your general waste bin.
  • Flowers: If they start to wilt, add them to your home compost bin or green garden waste bin.
  • Easter cards: Ensure they are not decorated with glitter so they can be recycled in your blue bag.
  • Packaging: Reuse packaging boxes and wrap gifts with brown paper.
  • Shredded paper: Place it in your blue bag (wrap it in newspaper to prevent it from blowing away).

Cricket

This week we welcomed Shropshire Cricket into school and all classes enjoyed learning new skills.

If your child would like to play cricket please go to All Star Cricket (Ages 5 – 8) or Dynamos cricket (Ages 8 – 11) to find out about cricket lessons near you.

Friends News

The Friends of Coalbrookdale are in need of a new logo for their social media accounts and letter heads.

The children will be bringing home a sheet to design a logo for us over the Easter holidays.

Can the designs please be handed into their teacher by the 2nd May with their name and class on the back, so the judges do not know who has drawn the picture.

There will be a first prize along with their logo being used, second and third prizes.

News from the parish: Palm Sunday family worship at St Luke’s

This Sunday 13th April, it is Palm Sunday, marking the start of Holy Week.

St Luke’s Ironbridge would like to welcome children and their families to a Family Worship service, 11am to 12 noon.

In our activity, we will be colouring palm leaves to show our praise to Jesus as he rides into Jerusalem. There will also be a chance for making and decorating Easter cards if children would like to do so.

The activity will be at the red JAM tables at the side of the church.

Children are welcome to either sit at the tables, or sit with their families in pews.

There are also books and toys available for younger children to play with in the church.

We hope to see children and their families there, and to share refreshments after the service has finished.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed and joyous Easter.
