Equality & Diversity

World Religion Day: Faith in Our Future, Hope in Our Future

We celebrated World Religion Day and the children produced some wonderful and thoughtful poems.

Through their RE learning, children explored how our communities are made up of people from many different cultures and beliefs. They reflected on what brings people together such as faith, hope, love, kindness and respect, as well as what can divide communities. The children considered messages from different faiths and worldviews about equality, compassion and challenging racism and intolerance.

The poems reflect the empathy, maturity and creativity shown by the children in every class and we are incredibly proud of how thoughtfully they engaged with these important themes.

Equality and Diversity

Our Commitment

At Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge C.E. Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality, celebrating diversity and ensuring that every member of our community is treated with dignity and respect.

Rooted in our Christian vision to “love each other as I have loved you” (John 15:12), we believe that every person is uniquely valued and made in the image of God. We are determined that all children feel they belong, achieve and thrive within our school community.

We warmly welcome pupils and families of all faiths and none and celebrate the diversity within our school and the wider world.

Our Legal Duties

In line with the Equality Act 2010, we are committed to:

  • Eliminating discrimination
  • Advancing equality of opportunity
  • Fostering good relations between people

We actively promote equality for all, including those protected by the nine protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or prejudice in any form.

How We Promote Equality and Diversity

An Inclusive Curriculum

Equality and diversity are embedded throughout our curriculum.

Through our PSHE and No Outsiders programme, children learn about inclusion, respect and the protected characteristics in an age-appropriate way. Pupils develop an understanding of fairness, identity and belonging.

Our RE curriculum, PSHE lessons and weekly Picture News discussions provide regular opportunities to explore different faiths, cultures, viewpoints and current issues in a respectful and thoughtful way.

Pupil Leadership – Our Diversity Group

We believe that children should actively shape our inclusive culture.

Our Diversity Group plays an important role in promoting equality across the school. Pupils in this group:

  • Lead discussions around inclusion and belonging
  • Promote awareness of diversity within our community
  • Support themed events and awareness days
  • Help ensure that all voices are heard

Through this leadership opportunity, pupils develop confidence, responsibility and a deeper understanding of equality in action.

High Expectations for All

We are ambitious for every pupil, including those with SEND and those facing disadvantage. We monitor progress carefully to ensure that all children achieve well from their starting points.

We work proactively to remove barriers to learning and participation so that every child has equal access to opportunities.

A Culture of Respect

Our school values of Trust, Responsibility, Respect, Compassion and Perseverance guide daily interactions.

We teach children to:

  • Respect differences
  • Challenge stereotypes
  • Stand up against discrimination
  • Show kindness and empathy

Children are encouraged to use their voice and become courageous advocates when they see injustice.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing

Equality and safeguarding are closely linked. We are vigilant in protecting pupils from prejudice-based bullying and harmful influences.

Staff are trained to recognise and respond promptly to concerns. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure that every child feels safe, supported and valued.

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

By celebrating differences, encouraging respectful dialogue and fostering inclusive values, we prepare children to contribute positively to modern Britain.

Our aim is not simply to teach about equality and diversity, but to ensure they are lived daily within our school community.
